Kilcullen’s first team narrowly missed out on progressing straight to the semi final of the championship after two games in quick succession. On Sun 09/08 we played Rathcoffey in Hawkfield and ran out comfortable winners 3.18 to 11 pts. Rathcoffey started brighter and had 2 pts scored before a shot dropped short was spilled by the Rathcoffey keeper and John Whyte was on hand to finish to the net. Kilcullen never let the lead slip and went in at halftime with a 4 pt advantage. The game was effectively ended when Brian Bell scored a goal about 10 mins into second half. A third goal by Shay Pembroke added to by some fine point scoring made for a facile win. Good displays by Gary Kenny, Jamie Lambe, Ben Foran and Brian Bell who really brought his A game.
On Fri 16/08 we played Robertstown with a quarter final place booked and scoring difference with Cappagh to determine the semi final berth. Kilcullen won on a score of 1.14 to 1.09 but Cappagh won their game by 16 pts and finished with a 1 pt better scoring difference which leaves the Rags playing Milltown on Saturday 29th August in the quarter final in Hawkfield.
In a good game v Robertstown a steady start saw Kilcullen edge ahead but a penalty was conceded and the Robertstown man made no mistake past stand in keeper Dan Fisher. The Rags responded well and chipped away with a few points to close the gap before Ben Foran struck for the decisive goal in the game which gave Kilcullen a lead they would not lose. A 5 point winning margin was probably not a true reflection as we should have scored at least 2 more goals and probably a few more points too. A new position for Dan Fisher maybe, Fran Shortt marshalling the defence with good support from Willie Jones and Mark Brophy, Darren Barker starting to motor as we come into the business end of the season augurs well, and the forwards sharing out the scoring is always a good sign.
