On Saturday 30th May 2015 our U12 team and supporters hit the road early at 6am, destination: Newry Mitchels All-Ireland U12 Tournament in Co. Down. Opposition: 48 teams from every corner of Ireland. After a stop for breakfast in Castlebellingham we reached the venue, held the Rags flag high in the parade of teams and after the National Anthem set about our task. In the group stages we were drawn against 4 teams from Northern Ireland: O’Donnovan Rossa from Derry, Saval from Down, St. Marys from Antrim and Clan na Gael from Armagh.
The format is unique, 14 minutes per game so the boys had to be sharp from the start. Kilcullen were unstoppable and blitzed Clan na Gael in the first game scoring points at a rate of almost one a minute, final score 1-12 to 2-4. Next up was our toughest test the formidable O’Donnovan Rossa team. We were seriously tested by one of the best U12 teams I have ever encountered, O’Donnovan Rossa played fantastic football and emerged deserving winners (they went all the way to the final of the tournament). Next was Saval. Kilcullen got back to winning ways winning this one by a point. In  the last game of the group stage we played St.Marys in a do or die game to see if we could progress to the quarter finals. A great game ended in Kilcullen winning by 3-4 to 2-3.
The boys were delighted winning 3 out of 4 games and reached the quarter final against Armagh Harps. Unfortunately despite our best efforts we ran out of juice and our run ended there losing by 1-4 to 3-6.The team and parents/supporters took a deserved break at Burgerking on the way home and the boys recounted a day they will never forget. Well done boys.
Representing Kilcullen and Kildare our team was: Jack Redmond, Mathew Baars, Rossa Howard, Mell Dolan, Theo Kavanagh, Jamie Duggan, Cathal Brophy, Tom Bohan, Donnacha O’ Connell, Ruairi Brown, Eoin O’Leary, Tadgh Brophy, Lee Dalton, Dawson Conroy, Samuel Tracey, Billy Bohan. Mentors on the day: Niall Howard and Ger Dolan. Flag carrier: Niall Og Howard.

KILCULLEN GAA CRESTKilcullen 4-7 Rathangan 5-9

Kilcullen took on Rathangan (unbeaten) on the school field on Sunday in the Division 2 semi-final. Rathangan got a dream start with a goal and 3 points within the first few minutes. Kilcullen were a little stunned by the speed and height of their opponents and struggled to get to grips with them throughout the first half. Rathangan scored some really impressive points from play. At half time Rathangan led by 11 points and so Kilcullen had two choices, bow their heads and surrender under the pressure or come out fighting and take on their opponents. Like so many times this year they choose the latter and threw everything they had at Rathangan. Some great scores followed and to their credit Kilcullen got the deficit down to 4 points. Rathangan were well and truly rattled at this stage, Kilcullen fired shots in from every angle and were very unlucky on several occasions hitting the upright, the crossbar several times, a shot that was over the line only to be discounted by the referee, but in the end our luck was out. Rathangan finished out worthy winners and look favourites to win this division.
Full marks once again to this Kilcullen team who never fail to give it their best. A great league campaign with many memorable games, the future looks good for our U12 boys.
Mentors: Richie Kelly, Richie Brophy, Niall Howard, David Early and Ger Dolan.
U12 Team 1 Panel: Mathew Brennan, Mathew Baars, Mell Dolan, Theo Kavanagh, Cathal Brophy, Ray Nolan, Scott Fleming, Ruairi Brown, Jamie Duggan, Dawson Conroy, Tom Maloney, Tom Healy, Eoin O’Leary, Hugo Owens, Lee Dalton, Tom Bohan, Rossa Howard, Jack Redmond, Samuel Tracey, Tiernan Stopes and Tadgh Brophy.

Next up we head to Newry-Mitchels GAA in county Down on Saturday to compete in the All Ireland U12 tournament. 48 teams will take part from all over Ireland. Kilcullen have an excellent record in this event reaching the semi-finals last year. Our boys are looking forward to representing their club and county on the big stage, best of luck boys.

U12’s play their part in a thriller semi final.

GAA BALLS2U12 Boys Team 2 Division 5 Semi-final
Kilcullen 2-11 Athy 6-8

Facing into a semi-final without 5 team regulars did not phase our U12 boys. Captained by Dawson Conroy Kilcullen were focused and ready for battle from the throw-in. Our forwards began well taking an early lead with some great scores and team work from Dawson Conroy, Rossa Howard, Jack Redmond, Tiernan Stopes and Tadgh Brophy. Midfielder Tom Bohan was outstanding in attack and defence and was our man of the match followed closely by Scott Fleming in the goals who put in a great performance. Kilcullen led by 2-7 to 2-5 at half time. Again Kilcullen started well in the second half with Ruairi Brown showing his class at corner forward. But Athy pressed hard for gaols and eventually cracked the formidable Kilcullen full back line of Mathew Brennan, Hugo Owens and Lee Dalton. The goals proved to be the difference between the teams with Athy scoring 4-3 in the second half to Kilcullens 0-4. To their credit Kilcullen gave it everything and despite scoring 2-11 lost the game to an impressive Athy side. Outstanding for Kilcullen were Jack Redmond, Scott Flemimg, Dawson Conroy, Cathal Brophy, Rossa Howard and Tom Bohan. Once again thanks to our parents and supporters who continue to be an integral part of this teams journey, always positive and offering great encouragement to every player on the panel. Well done boys great football and teamwork.
