Ladies Junior A Championship – Athgarvan 0-11 Kilcullen 0-8 – Sat 24th Aug 2013

Athgarvan advanced to the semi-finals of the championship after a hard fought win over Kilcullen.   in testing conditions, both sides gave everything, but Athgarvan’s experience and composure saw them through.  The Ragettes got off to a flying start and scored the first 3 points of the game.  But the home side then settled into the game, as Kilcullen got a bit sloppy with their passing.    Former Kildare star Tracy Noone led the way for Athgarvan and was involved in most of their scores as they went in at half-time with a 0-7 to 0-5 lead.   The second half was a real battle as Kilcullen refused to give in, but Athgarvan kept doing enough to stay ahead.   It wasn’t pretty at times, as both sides gave absolutely everything.   Kilcullen struggled to get their dangerous forwards enough ball, and Athgarvan held out for the win.
Best for Kilcullen were Daire Smyth, Emily Vaughan and substitute Kaylee Cogan.

Ladies Junior A Championship – Kilcullen 1-7 Monasterevin 0-17 – Fri 2nd Aug 2013

Kilcullen Ladies lost out to an excellent Monasterevin side in the first round of the championship, but certainly didn’t go down without a fight, and the the scoreline was very harsh on the Ragette’s efforts.    The first half was a very even affair, as Kilcullen’s defended superbly, much to Monasterevin’s frustration, while at the other end Jayne Peacocke and Ciara Pembroke were causing trouble for the visiting defence.    The second half followed a similar pattern until the final 10 minutes when Monasterevin pulled away with Simone Gilabert faultless from frees.   However, Kilcullen who had lost heavily to the same opposition twice in the league were much improved since then, and were well in the game throughout, until they tired towards the end of the game.
Best for Kilcullen were both Clare Kellys, Claire Mulrennan, Amy Moran and Ciara Pembroke.

KIlcullen Line-Up:  Aoife Molyneaux;  Katie O’Brien, Karen Bell, Caroline Breen;  Nikki Dowling, Claire Mulrennan, Amanda Boland;  Lorraine Schwer, Sinéad Maher;  Clare Kelly, Amy Moran(0-1), Emily Vaughan;  Clare Kelly, Jayne Peacocke(capt)(1-4,1-3f), Ciara Pembroke(0-2).

Ladies Senior Div 3 Semi-Final – Clane 1-12 Kilcullen 1-6 – Sat 6th July 2013

Kilcullen Ladies lost out to a good Clane side after an excellent contest on a scorching Saturday evening in Clane.   However, the Ragettes can be very proud of their efforts, as they gave everything, and will have learned plenty from the game.   The first half was a very even affair, with the home side getting the first two points before Jayne Peacocke responded for Kilcullen with a well-taken goal.  Both teams were giving it their all, and it was an enthralling game, and this was reflected in the scores being level at half-time with Kilcullen scoring 1-2 to Clane’s 0-5.   The third quarter was continued in the same vein, and the sides traded scores and it was level again with 15 minutes to go.   However, Clane grabbed a vital goal, and used all their experience to see out the game and take a 1-12 to 1-6 win, a margin that was certainly harsh on Kilcullen’s efforts.
The whole Kilcullen side gave everything, but Clare Kelly at corner back, Emily Vaughan at half-back and Daire Smyth in midfield all excelled, while Jayne Peacocke was clinical in attack.

Kilcullen Line-Up:  Aoife Molyneaux; Clare Kelly, Karen Bell, Claire Mulrennan;  Nikki Dowling, Amanda Boland, Emily Vaughan;  Lorraine Schwer, Daire Smyth;  Amy Moran, Clare Kelly, Sinéad Maher;  Jayne Peacocke(capt)(1-6,6f), Lydia O’Toole, Ciara Pembroke.

Kilcullen Ladies showed the strength in depth they have built up in their panel, when despite missing a number of regulars, they came away from Robert Emmetts with a 0-9 to 1-4 win after an excellent battling performance.   Kilcullen played some excellent football in the first half and took a deserved 0-7 to 0-3 half-time lead, and could have had a few goals were it not for some good saves from the Emmett’s keeper Róisín McConnon.  However, the home side got back into the game in the second half with a goal, and it was a very tight game thereafter, with both sides giving everything on a very warm night.   Kilcullen did enough to hold out for a win on a scoreline of 0-9 to 1-4.

Ladies Senior Div 3 – Suncroft 0-2 Kilcullen 6-14 – Thu 23rd May 2013

Kilcullen Ladies put their defeat in their previous game behind then in spectacular style away to Suncroft.   The Croft were missing a few regulars, but the Ragettes were missing a couple of important players themselves, so it was still an excellent performance.   The game was played as 13 a side, and this suited the Kilcullen forwards, as they capitalised on captain Jayne Peacocke’s decision to play with the strong wind at their backs in the first half.     Aoibheann and Daire Smyth were dominant in midfield, and with Suncroft struggling to get out of their own half, the Ragettes forwards racked up 4-10 in the first half, with all the Kilcullen forwards getting on the scoresheet.     The Kilcullen performance in the second half was equally impressive in it’s own way, as they managed to add another 2-4 facing into a strong breeze, with substitute Gemma Carey scoring 1-2.
Kilcullen put in an excellent all round performance of hard work and plenty of excellent football.    Karen Bell, Nikki Dowling, Daire Smyth, Ciara Pembroke and Sinéad Maher all excelled.

Ladies Senior Div 3 – Monasterevin 2-19 Kilcullen 0-5 – Thu 16th May 2013

By Ann Hughes

Monasterevan took on Kilcullen in the Division 3 league. The game began with Dara Smith winning the throw in and Kilcullen building an attack, this attack was broke down by the strong defensive work of Monasterevan’s backs. The opening score of the game came from a well worked attack that started with Vicky Kelly winning the ball in midfield and powering forward, the ball was pointed by Simone Bell. Monasterevan got some quick scores from great attacking work by Heavy, McBride, Melia, Bell, Murphy and Tracey Greed. Kilcullen keeper Aoife Molyneaux pulled off some great saves, put Greed and Heavy both found the back of the Kilcullen net from well worked passes down the field. Smith and Coogan contested well for the kick outs but the Monasterevan midfield were just too strong. Kilcullen did get into the game with some great play by Claire Kelly and Ciara Peacock, well worked passes and a lay off from Jane Peacock saw the ball narrowly drift wide. A fantastic individual score from Marie O’Reilly saw Monastervan go 2.9 ahead. A well worked move that involved Caroline Breen and Pembrook saw Peacock put Kilcullens first score on the board. The remainder of the first half saw great attacking play from Monasterevan with good link up play from Michelle Morrissey and Caoimhe Harrison on the wing leading to great finishes from Simone Bell. Harrison’s hard work paid off when she won the Kilcullen kick out and drove forward to put the ball over the bar. The closing score of the half came from Kilcullens Ciara Pembrook. Half Time Score: Monastervan 2.12 – Kilcullen 0-3.
The second half began with Melia and Kelly dominating midfield once again, the opening score of the second half came from a quick free that Melia won and was pointed over by Bell. Kilcullens kick out was won by Vicky Kelly, a powering run forward saw captain Kelly slot the ball over the bar. But Kilcullens Jane Peacock was not ready to leave Ros Glas pitch without a fight. Peacock drifted from full forward to midfield to win the ball, Peacock continued a powering run forward which resulted in a free which Peacock nicely slotted over the bar. Some well worked attacks from Kilcullens Kelly, Smith, Coogan and Sinead Maher saw the Monasterevan backs under some pressure. Good defensive work from Sharon Melia broke down the Kilcullen attack, this resulted in quick passes up the field and finished with Bell point. The Melia sisters then swapped positions due to Sinead Melia picking up a knock, Sharon Melia was strong in midfield and some may say she has found a new position. Kilcullen again responded when Claire Kelly took a quick free which was won well in the air by Dara Smith, Kilcullen attacked but again were stopped by the strong defensive work of Jenny Gleeson, Sarah McCormack and Debbie Coughlin. Melia broke from the back line with the ball, a quick lay off to Sinead McBride who passed quickly to Harrison finished with a great score from Morrissey. Caroline Gorry denied Ciara Pembrook from finding the back of the net when she pulled off a great save. Throughout the game Gorry’s kick outs were consistent and well won by the Monasterevan midfield and half back line. Overall it was a game dominated by Monasterevan, but the Kilcullen team kept great fight till the very end. The game finished Monasterevan 2.19 – Kilcullen 0-5. Teams:

Ladies Senior Div 3 – Kilcullen 1-7 Clane 1-7 – Tue 7th May 2013

Kilcullen Ladies produced their best performance of the season so far, to earn a 1-7 all draw with a strong Clane side.  The game was very even the whole way through.   However, Clane were taking their chances better in the opening half and had a 0-6 to 0-3 lead which was harsh on Kilcullen’s efforts.    However, a well taken Ciara Pembroke goal brought the sides level.  Clane did get one more point in the opening period to take a 0-7 to 1-3 half-time lead.   The Ragettes worked their way into the lead in the second half, with new captain Jayne Peacocke scoring some excellent points from play and frees.    A Clane goal put the visitors back in the lead,  but the home side got an equaliser, to leave the final score at 1-7 each.   The draw was probably a fair result, after an excellent game of football played at a great pace, where both sides gave everything.
Sinéad Maher was oustanding at centre back for Kilcullen, while Clare Kelly at corner back, Kayleigh Cogan in midfield, and Jayne Peacocke and Daire Smyth in the forwards all excelled.

Ladies Senior Div 3 – Kilcullen 1-4 Monasterevin 4-12 – Tue 9th April 2013

Kilcullen Ladies faced a very strong Monasterevin side in a tough night at the office for the Ragettes.  Monasterevin played some excellent football, inspired by former Kildare star Simone Gilabert, and put in a clinical display in the first half.   However, the Kilcullen girls never gave in and were much improved in the second half.   Captain for the night Sinéad Maher was moved on to Gilabert in the second half, and kept her much quieter, and Monasterevin’s options were restricted as a result.   Kilcullen were then able to get forward and get a few scores of their own.  Best for the Ragettes were Lorraine Schwer, who worked tirelessly all through the game, Kayleigh Cogan and Claire Mulrennan.

KIlcullen Line-Up:  Aoife Molyneaux;  Rachel Hovendan-Keane, Claire Mulrennan, Clare Kelly;  Lisa Hogan, Nikki Dowling, Sinéad Maher(capt);  Lorraine Schwer(0-2), Daire Smyth;  Clare Kelly, Kayleigh Cogan(0-1), Ciara Pembroke;  Aoife Buckley, Jayne Peacocke(1-1,1f), Sarah Doherty.

Ladies Senior Div 3 – Clane 3-5 Kilcullen 1-1 – Tue 2nd April 2013

Kilcullen Ladies put in a spirited performance away to a strong Clane side in their opening league game.   The Ragettes were missing a number of players, but those who played gave everything and played some excellent football.   However, Clane were that bit stronger and fitter, although the winning margin is certainly harsh on the efforts of the Kilcullen girls, who kept going right up to the final whistle.     Best for Kilcullen were Lorraine Schwer, Daire Smyth, Rachel Hovendan Keane and Sinéad Maher.

Kilcullen Line-Up:  Aoife Molyneaux;  Rachel Hovendan Keane, Karen Bell, Clare Kelly;  Emily Vaughan, Nikki Dowling;  Lorraine Schwer, Daire Smyth;  Gemma Carey, Clare Kelly(0-1), Sinéad Maher;  Ciara Pembroke(1-0), Jayne Peacocke(capt), Sarah Doherty.
