Kilcullen and Kilcock produced two highly entertaining games in the final of this championship last year, and it was more of the same here, but this time it was Kilcock who took the victory. However, the Rags team that took the field is much changed from the team that played in those games last year, and this young side deserve great praise for giving a strong Kilcock side such a great game. Kilcock had most of the play and the wind at their backs in the first half, but Kilcullen’s ability to get goals kept them in the game, thanks to two of the young stars. David Mitchell scored two goals, and David Keane scored a wonder solo goal to leave the half-time score at Kilcock 1-8 Kilcullen 3-1.
The Rags then took the lead early in the second half, when a long ball in, was punched to the net by Kelvin Kelly. Kilcock then had period of dominance and looked to have pulled away, and had a nine point lead. But to Kilcullen’s credit, they never dropped their heads, and kept battling away, and goals from Kelly and Keane brought the Rags right back into the game. By the end, Kilcock were hanging on, but they held on for what was probably a deserved victory, while the Rags saw plenty of encouraging signs to say that they can still have a run in this championship, despite this defeat.
Ger Shanahan played very well for Kilcullen, and showed great leadership to his younger team-mates, while Niall Folan, David Hickey, David Keane and David Mitchell all also did well for the Rags.

Kilcullen Juniors showed remarkable fighting spirit to come back from 6 points down mid-way through the second half, to earn a deserved draw in this entertaining contest. Castledermot had held a 0-7 to 0-5 lead at half-time, having been more efficient with their chances than the Rags. Two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half helped the visitors to a 6 point lead, but Kilcullen refused to give in. Well taken points from David Mitchell and John Keatley brought the Rags within 4, before Willie Jones scored a magnificent solo goal, weaving through the Castledermot defence and burying the ball to the net. David Keane then showed great composure for such a young player to get the late equalizer, and a hard earned draw for the Rags.
Best for Kilcullen were Niall Folan, Shane O’Connor, Johnny Browne, John Keatley and David Keane.

Kilcullen Junior’s lost by 2-8 to 0-9 at home to Maynooth although the score-line was a little harsh on the Rags. In a low-scoring first half, a scrappy goal was the difference between the sides, with the visitors leading by 1-4 to 0-3 at the break.
The Rags were much improved in the second half, and fought back to level the game at 1-4 to 0-7. However, Maynooth then got a goal from the penalty spot and never looked back from there, despite the best efforts of a young Kilcullen side. Cormac Aspell was best for Kilcullen scoring six points, including four from play. Shane O’Connor, Wayne Hegarty-Kelly and David Hickey also did well.

Kilcullen Juniors got off the mark on Monday night with a good away win over Kill. The first half was a scrappy low-scoring affair, untill David Mitchell got a goal for Kilcullen after a goal-mouth scramble. The Rags got a second goal, when a long range Mick Williams free was flicked to the net by Kelvin Kelly, to put the away side in front by 2-2 to 0-3 at half-time.
There was much better football from both sides in the second half, particularly Kilcullen. Some good scores from David Mitchell and Shay Pembroke, resulted from the Rags looking much more potent in attack. Kill didn’t give in easily, however and hit a purple patch where they scored a few well taken points and a goal from the penalty spot. But, Mitchell’s second goal of the game for the Rags put the result beyond doubt. Best for Kilcullen were Wayne Hegarty-Kelly, Jamie Westerman, Willie Jones, David Mitchell and Shay Pembroke.
Kilcullen Line-Up: S.O’Brien; N.Folan, W.Hegarty-Kelly, J.Westerman; M.Murphy, P.Coffey, S.Fogarty; G.Shanahan, D.Hickey; M.Williams(0-1f), W.Jones, D.Mitchell(2-2); S.Pembroke(0-4f), K.Kelly(1-0), D.Harris.

An understrength Kilcullen Junior side put in a spirited display against a strong Allenwood side in an entertaining game tonight. The match was played 13-a-side which led to an open game. The Allenwood forwards took advantage of this in the first half, and held a 1-9 to 1-2 advantage at half-time, with Kilcullen’s goal coming from a David Hickey penalty.
Allenwood were 10 points ahead mid-way through the second half, but the Rags never gave up and dominated the latter stages of the game to close the gap to three points, thanks to some good points, and goals from David Harris and David Hickey. Everybody gave their all for Kilcullen, and best on the night were Martin Murphy, Ger Shanahan, David Hickey, Paul Coffey and Willie Jones.
Kilcullen Line-Up: R.Kiely; W.Hegarty-Kelly, R.Toft; M.Murphy(0-2), F.Shortt, J.Westerman; G.Shanahan, D.Hickey(2-2,1-0pen); P.Coffey(0-1), W.Jones(0-1), D.Harris(1-0); K.Kelly, N.Folan(0-1).
