Junior A Championship – Kilcullen 5-13 Rathangan 3-4 – Tues July 4th
Kilcullen Ladies made it 2 wins from 2 games played after a good win over Rathangan. Rathangan got off to a great start with an attacking move straight from the throw-in leading to a goal within 20 seconds. However, the Ragettes responded within minutes with a goal of their own from Avril Glendon. The first half was very tight with Kilcullen struggling to impose themselves on the game. They did add a further 5 points in the half, and could have had a second goal only for Tara Breen’s effort smashing off the crossbar. Meanwhile, Rathangan added a second goal to leave the scores all square at the break on a scoreline of Kilcullen 1-5 Rathangan 2-2.
The home side knew they had much to improve on in the second half, and improve they certainly did. Experienced forwards Jayne Peacocke and Clare Kelly showed great leadership and the Ragettes scored 1-5 without reply with Kelly grabbing the goal. Rathangan pulled a goal back, but Ciara Pembroke restored the 8 point lead for Kilcullen with a composed finish to the net. The home side never looked back from there and they went on to rack up an impressive 5-13 with further goals from Peacocke and Kelly sealing the victory.
Kilcullen will be delighted with their second half performance and will look to replicate it over the full game in their next outing. Jayne Peacocke led the way for the Ragettes with a captain’s performance, notching up 1-6 in the process. Bróna Dooley, Clare Kelly, Tara Breen and sub Ciara Pembroke all also excelled.
