Kilcullen seniors travelled the short journey to Ballymore this evening and clinched their second league win of the new season with a second half performance that showed real grit and determination.
It was Ballymore, playing into the wind in the first half, that got out of the blocks quickest. 3 unanswered points saw Kilcullen struggling to match Ballymore physically and it was a full 16 minutes before the Rags registered their first score of the game.
What a score it was! Shay Pembroke rattled the back of the Ballymore net from distance and from looking completely out of contention in the opening quarter Kilcullen managed to go into the half time break all square 1-02 to 0-05 with Pembroke accounting for all Kilcullen’s scores.
With the wind in the second half it was fully expected that Ballymore would shake off the late first half momentum shift. However, as the minutes ticked by it was Kilcullen who looked most comfortable on the ball and into the wind with David Marshall putting in a commanding shift at midfield for the visitors.
Kilcullen got their noses in front when on 6 minutes Alan Kenny seized the opportunity and pulled on a loose ball to get Kilcullen’s second goal of the game. The goal rattled the home side who from there seemed to be chasing the game as Kilcullen grew in confidence.
Two further points each from Marshall and Jamie Lambe saw Ballymore resorting to long range attempts as the Kilcullen defence stood firm. Kilcullen wrapped up the win 2-07 to 0-11 after 2 minutes of additional time in the second half to bag their second away win of the season following the success over Robertstown.
