Juniors Defeat rounds off bad weekendKilcullen were well beaten in the Senior B Championship by Leixlip in Naas last night. The final score was 4-13 to 0-3. However, the Juniors have lost numerous players to the seniors in recent weeks, and there were also a couple of players unavailable due to work or holidays. This meant that they were short about 10 regulars who had played the league matches. Also, the opposition operate in Senior Division 3, so there is no shame for Kilcullen in defeat. The Juniors had a reasonably successful league campaign, and this also meant when players were called into the Seniors they had competitive football under their belts. This undoubtedly helped the Seniors progress in the championship.
Defeat for RagsKilcullen were beaten by Allenwood in the Senior Championship Quarter Final in Newbridge yesterday evening. The final score was 1-13 to 0-7. The Rags played some great football in the first half and were still well in the game for about 40 minutes. Michael 'Hook' Kelly had the chance to put Kilcullen in front from the penalty spot in the second half. Unfortunately he put it over the bar and the resulting point proved to be the Rags only score of the second half, as Allenwood then pulled away for a comprehensive victory. .
Senior Championship Quarter Final Kilcullen "v" Allenwood, 5.00pm Saturday 26th August, St.Conleth's County Grounds, NewbridgeSenior B Championship First Round Kilcullen "v" Leixlip, 7.00pm Monday 28th August, Naas GAA Grounds
Senior Championship DetailsKilcullen have been drawn against 2004 County Champions Allenwood in the Senior Championship Quarter Finals. This match will take place at St.Conleth's county grounds in Newbridge next Saturday at 5pm. The game will be followed by the game between Moorefield and Carbuty at 6.30pm. Should Kilcullen cause an upset and beat Allenwood, they will play the winners of Ellistown and Celbridge in the semi-final. They play in a double header in Newbridge on Sunday with the Round Towers v St.Laurences quarter final. It promises to be a very interesting weekend of championship action, which will hopefully start with a Rags victory.Juniors Match Postponed AgainIn case any of you heard over the weekend that the Juniors were playing Sarsfields tonight in the match that was postponed last week, it is off again.
The Rags March OnFor the sirst time since the groups were introduced to the Kildare Senior Football Championship, Kilcullen have qualified for the quarter finals of the competition. A Shane Lambe goal and a sending off were the deciding factors in a tight contest in the county grounds in Newbridge on Saturday night that saw the rags run out deserved 1-7 to 0-8 winners. As group runners up (behind Round Towers) Kilcullen now face one of the other group winners (probably Moorefield, Allenwood or Ellistown) next weekend. This website wishes the team congratulations but hopes there's still more to come this year from this bunch of players!Under 16's also win:The Under 16's made it two for two with a controversial win over neighbours Suncroft on Friday night. In ,what has to be said, was a rough contest which saw several Suncroft players get the line the young Rags stuck to the task at hand and came out deserved winners making it a good weekend for the club by also progressing to the next round.
Crucial Weekend for SeniorsIt's all to play for in Group D of the Senior Championship. With all four teams having one win from their two games each, a victory for any of the sides in their last group game this Saturday will see them through to the Quarter Finals. Kilcullen play Athy at 7pm on Saturday night in St.Conleth's County Grounds in Newbridge. The game is preceded by the other game in our group between Sarfields and Round Towers which also promises to be exciting. Hopefully a big contingent from the town will make the trip over to support the Rags despite last weekends disappointing game. There are no All-Ireland hurling semi-finals or Soccer Charity Shields on at 7pm on a Saturday night so it would be great to have a big crowd over to roar on the lads. Under 16 NewsThe Under 16's opened their championship with a comprehensive win over Nurney/Athgarvan last Friday. Their next game is at home this Friday evening at 7pm against Suncroft.
Championship Defeat for Seniors:The seniors lost to Round Towers in the Championship in Newbridge. In a disappointing game they went down by 0-8 to 0-6. However, Sarsfields defeat of Athy in the other game in our group means that the group is now wide open. This means that all four teams in the group have now got one win each. So lets hope the team can regroup and get a win against Athy in the final group game next weekend and ensure qualification. (Full match report on yesterday's game to follow).Junior match postponedThe Junior match scheduled for tonight against Sarsfields has been postponed. No new date has been organised yet as the Junior Championship is due to take place in the coming weeks.
Championship Time is here again!:It's been a long frustrating wait (over three months), but the Senior Club Championship is back under way this weekend. Following on from that impressive opening win over Sarsfields at the beginning of the summer, we now face another one of the big guns in Round Towers. The game takes place in the St.Conleth's county grounds in Newbridge at 4.30pm on Sunday. As a win would give the club a great chance of advancing in the championship, it would be great to see a big contingent of people from the town (new and old) over in Newbridge to cheer on the Rags. The game is followed at 6pm by the Group B game between St.Laurence's and Ellistown. The other game in our Group (D) between Sarsfields and Athy takes place in Newbridge the previous evening (Sat) at 7pm. Race Night:Final preparations are underway for what promises to be a great night's entertainment when Kilcullen GAA Club hosts a Race night at Newbridge Greyhound Stadium this Saturday night. The Race Night is being held in aid of club funds and it offers the prospect of an excellent nightnight's racing with many prizeson offer to ticket holders. Tickets for this gala night are still available from any member of the committee.Senior League Play-Off confusion resolved:The confusion over whether the Seniors' Division 1 relegation play-off was straight knock-out or round robin has been resolved. It is to be played on a round robin basis which means we are far from safe yet. However, last weekend's opening victory against Ballymore and the fact that only one team of the four go down to Division 2 mean we have a good chance of avoiding the drop. Leixlip beat Confey in the other game last weekend.Junior News:The Juniors lost by 3-11 to 0-11 away to Leixlip in the league last night. This means they must win their last game to qualify for the semi-finals. This game is at home to Sarsfields next Monday night at 7.30pm.Under 16 Championship:It's not just the Seniors who are in Championship action this weekend, as the Under 16's play Nurney/Athgarvan on Friday night at 7pm in Athgarvan. And finally....If all the above isn't enough GAA related stuff to be getting on with at the weekend, the Intermediate Championship game between Suncroft and Monasterevin takes place in Kilcullen at 7.30pm this Friday night with Mick Spencer officiating.
Seniors in Good Form:The Senior team chalked up a decent win in the Division 1 relegation play-off over Ballymore yesterday evening. A goal each from Mick Williams, Brian Bell, Ger Shanahan and Christy Howard saw Kilcullen home to a convincing 4-11 to 1-6 victory in St. Laurence's. Confusion still remains over whether Kilcullen are now safe after winning this game as was stated in the Leinster Leader or if this is a round-robin play-off system as was the case in previous years. That's for another day however, as all attention now switches to the Championship where the Rags take on Round Towers next Sunday in the country grounds.
Ladies off to a good start:The ladies team won their first league game with a comprehensive 4-8 to 0-8 victory away to Castledermot last night. They have a number of games coming up in the next few weeks so this good start should give them a lot of confidence going into these games.
Ladies First League Game:The ladies play their first game in Senior League Division 3. They play away to Castledermot at 7.30pm this evening (Wed). Having performed admirably in their first season in the championship culminating in a narrow defeat to Carbury last week, they will be hoping build on that good work in the league.Seniors League Play-Off:The Seniors match against Ballymore that was postponed last week, goes ahead this Saturday at 5pm in Old Grange (St.Laurence's). The other two sides in the play-offs to see who drops to Division 2 are Leixlip and Confey. The Rags will be hoping to get off to a good start aginst Ballymore who they beat in the league itself. Also a win and a good performance would do no harm a week before the Championship resumes.Juniors Back in Action:The Juniors play their first game in a while, away to Leixlip on Tuesday night at 7.30pm. A win is important to keep their league semi-final chances alive.Division 2 play-off:Also of note is that the Division 2 relegation play-off between Eadestown and Suncroft has been fixed for this Friday night in Kilcullen at 7pm with Mick Spencer refereeing.
