Rags Avoid Relegation:Kilcullen beat Castlemitchell last night in a scrappy affair in Old Grange to retain the club's intermediate status for next year. The Rags made some good headway in the early exchanges with Paul Jones and Collie Fox putting up some early scores but any advantage this might have achieved was scuppered when a defensive mix-up allowed Tadhg Fennin to ghost in for a goal. This then meant that the rags only held a two point lead(0-6 to 1-1) at the break even though Castlemitchell had only managed two scores. The second half followed much the same pattern with Kilcullen just keeping their noses in front, with some well worked scores from Jones again, Jamie Lambe and a fantastic point from Brian Fox, but unable to pull away. Twice this nearly cost them with Fennin hitting both posts on seperate occasions when going for goal. Thankfully though, with the match in the balance in injury time a sweetly struck Thomas Davis point was enough to get the rags over the line and avoid an all or nothing relegation play-off next week.
Final score: Kilcullen 0-12 Castlemitchell 1-8 Kilcullen Line-Up: Paddy Maher; D.Barker, J.Burke, C.McMahon; Paul Maher(capt), K.O'Brien, B.Fox(0-1); W.Kinsella, T.Davis(0-1); C.Aspell, S.Lambe, C.Fox(0-3, 2f); P.Jones(0-5, 2f), J.Lambe(0-1), J.Whyte(0-1) Sub Used:J.Browne, M.Brophy Under 16's Win Championship:Congratulations to the Under 16's who beat Ballykelly in the Under-16 B Championship county final yesterday by a score of 1-6 to 0-8. Relegation Play-Off Fixture Confirmed:Kilcullen have been drawn to play Castlemitchell in the next round of the Intermediate Championship Relegation process. The losers of this match will play the losers of Eadeastown and Ballykelly to decide who plays in the Junior championship next year. Rags in Relegation Dogfight:Kilcullen lost to Rathangan last night in what was ultimately a one-sided affair in Athy. Rathangan were finding it easier to create scores for most of the contest but a well worked Jamie Lambe goal in the first half saw Kilcullen lucky to go in only two points down after a first-half which had also seen a Rathangan penalty being put over the bar. However it was the ten-minute spell immediately after half-time that ultimately ended this match as a contest with Paddy Maher forced into some excellent saves in the Kilcullen goal and Rathangan putting five points on the board without reply opening the gap to to seven. The Rags made inroads into this lead at different times in the remainder of the half but despite having a man sent off Rathangan were still able to tag on a few extra scores to keep daylight between the teams.
Final score: Rathangan 0-17 Kilcullen 1-9 (Kilcullen now go into the next round of the Intermediate championship relegation-playoff process along with Sallins, Eadestown and Ballykelly) Kilcullen Line-Up: Paddy Maher; B.Fox, J.Burke, Paul Maher(capt); K.O'Brien, R.Aspell, D.Barker; W.Kinsella, T.Davis(0-1); C.Fox(0-5, 4f), S.Lambe(0-1), C.Aspell; P.Jones(0-1), J.Lambe(1-1), J.Whyte Sub Used:D.Droney

Kilcullen Exit Intermediate Championship:Kilcullen were beaten by Nurney, in what was a very poor game marred by negative football and countless fouls, on Saturday night in St. Laurence's. Nurney got off to a flying start and were 1-1 to no score up after five minutes thanks to a penalty and free from county star Michael Conway, who would go on to finish the contest with 1-7 all from placed balls. Kilcullen struggled to find any tempo or composure in a very poor first-half performance and were trailing by 1-7 to 0-3 at the break having failed to score from play. The second half started better for the rags with the introduction of Shane Lambe, Michael Kelly and Donal Droney who helped to put more purpose and shape into Kilcullen's play. A fine 'Hook' Kelly point and a neat tap over from Paul Jones along with frees from Collie Fox and Jones again saw Kilcullen scrap their way back into the game although Conway was still keeping the scoreboard ticking over for Nurney keeping the rags at armslength. The game was looking like a Nurney victory as they were leading by 3 points deep into injury time when a spirited surge from Kevin O'Brien resulted in Kilcullen being awarded a penalty. An unpleasant scene then emerged as players and others reacted to the decision which really didn't do anything to help penalty taker Paul Jones. However his penalty was well struck but an excellent save from the Nurney keeper left Kilcullen to rue a dreadful first half and now contemplating the relegation end of the Intermediate Championship.
Final score: Nurney 1-11 Kilcullen 0-11 (Kilcullen exit the championship on score difference) Kilcullen Line-Up: S.Barker; M.Dooley, R.Aspell, C.McMahon; B.Fox, K.O'Brien, Paul Maher(capt); W.Kinsella, T.Davis; C.Fox(0-5, 5f), D.Barker, C.Aspell(0-1, 1f); J.Whyte, J.Lambe, P.Jones(0-4, 3f) Subs Used:S.Lambe, M.Kelly(0-1), D.Droney
