Kilcullen got off to the worst imaginable start when in addition to conceding 1-1 in the first ninety seconds, goalkeeper Paddy Maher was carried off with a nasty looking injury after bravely coming from his line for a dropping ball. Any hope that this stoppage would halt Ballyteague's momentum was quickly dashed when another well taken goal and some excellent long range scores saw the teams come in at the break Ballyteague 2-8 Kilcullen 0-4.

The second half saw a resurgence from the Rags with the introduction of Fergus Aspell in midfield providing the link play which was badly missing in the first. Scores from play were still proving hard to come by but when Darren Barker burst up the field for a well taken goal the gap was down to 4 with time to go. However this was as close as it would get with Ballyteague closing out the match by tagging on two more points to make the final score 2-12 to 1-9.

The Rags can point to two incidents in either half which looked like they should have had a penalty and the calling back of a quick-free which would also have been an excellent goal scoring chance but in reality will know that this performance was not good enough to reach a similar stage of the Championship as last year. The most positive note to mention is that with four rounds in this year's group stage Kilcullen should have sufficient chance to turn their year around.

Kilcullen Line-Up: P.Maher; C.McMahon, J.Burke, M.Dooley; B.Fox, K.O'Brien(capt), D.Barker(1-0); W.Kinsella, T.Davis; J.Lambe, B.Bell(0-1f), P.Jones(0-5,0-3f); J.Whyte, S.Lambe, C.Fox(0-4f)
Subs Used: B.McMahon, F.Aspell, R.Aspell, C.Howard, P.Bell

Championship Begins!:
The Intermediate Championship begins this weekend, and Kilcullen will be striving to go one better, after losing the final last year to eventual Leinster Champions Maynooth. However, the Rags have a tough opening game against Ballyteague. The main threat from Ballyteague will probably be Gavin Smullen, who was a star forward on the Kildare Under 21 team who reached the All-Ireland Final two years ago. The game takes place on Sunday at 4pm in Moorefield.

Juniors Take Kill:
The Junior team showed great battling spirit last night to take a one point victory over Kill. The Rags dominated the first half, and should have held a bigger lead than the 1-3 to 0-2 half-time score. The goal was a wonderfully taken effort from Christy Howard, who appears to be flying fit, since returning from his travels. Kill clawed their way back into the game in the second half, and got back on level terms, but Kilcullen did just enough to claim a hard fought victory. Man of the match was Paul Bell, who scored points at crucial stages of the game to keep the Rags in pole positon. Others to shine were Mark Dooley, Danny Fisher and Christy Howard.

Kilcullen Line-Up: D.McMahon; S.O'Connor, M.Dooley, G.Bond; O.Nolan, F.Shortt, D.Fisher(0-1 45); A.Carroll, M.Kelly(0-1); T.Shanahan(capt), C.Howard(1-1), J.Caples; P.Bell(0-4,3f), W.Jones, R.Kiely.
Subs Used: D.O'Connor, M.Brophy, R.Toft.

Next up for the Juniors is a home game against Moorefield on Monday night at 7pm.

Other Fixture:
The Intermediate Championship game between Castledermot and Kill takes place in Kilcullen on Sunday at 6.30pm.

Rags Return To Winning Ways:
Kilcullen had a 1-14 to 0-10 win over Milltown yesterday in Division 2. Kilcullen started brightly, but Laurences were more clinical with their chances and took a 0-5 to 0-3 lead into the break. The second half was a fairly even scrappy affair, but the visitors found the net, and that proved to be the difference. However, a number of the Kilcullen players were playing their first game for some time, and with other players to come back, the Rags are sure to improve in the weeks ahead. Now it seems they find it more difficult to lose one.
Two minutes into the second half of this Keogh Cup final at Naas on Saturday, they trailed a totally dominant Johns-townbridge team by 1-8 to 1-2.

There are those who think that even the addition of Dessie Brennan to the Kilcullen management team won't see them equal or better last autumn's achievement of making the intermediate final. The last 28 minutes of this game may force them to think again.

Neither of these sides won a game in the league last year. But while Johnstownbridge's malaise spilled over into a lacklustre championship, the horror run was the wake up call that Kilcullen maybe needed. And the habit they formed of winning tough games stood to them here as they upped their performance several notches to kick Johnstownbridge off the field.

There were savage scores from various quarters as the Rags outscored their opponents 1-6 to 0-1 from the 32nd minute to the end.
Not that we should be too quick to pen an obituary for Declan Kerrigan's side, either. After all, they took to the stage without most of their leading men; Brian Flanagan, Keith Cribbin, Paul Cribbin and Padraig Hurley were among the absentees.

Early on they made light of the missing players. They had several impressive contributors as they seized control, but none more eye-catching than corner-forward Cathal McNally.

He scored 1-4, 1-3 from play, and gave the final pass for two other points, all in the first half. The only thing more entertaining than his play was the pass he received from the otherwise quiet Shane Flanagan for the 17th minute goal, the full forward sending a brilliantly judged ball over the top of the full-back line.

That came a minute after Kilcullen had got their first goal, when the impressive Darren Barker coolly set up Paul Jones after a defensive mistake.

Once McNally replied in kind, the bridge were rampant, and after he added two minors, fine scores from Ian Farrell and JP Mullen established a 1-7 to 1-2 lead.

No sign of the change to come on the restart; Jason O'Keeffe made the gap six, and with 18 minutes to go, that was still the margin.
Full-back Ronan Aspell was one of the few Kilcullen men playing well; and when he had to go off injured, there was no reason not to think the game might turn into a rout.

But gradually, Kilcullen turned the game on its head. Thomas Davis took over midfield. At corner back, Ciaran McMahon, who had suffered badly earlier against Cathal McNally, started to get the better of him. Kevin O'Brien grew at centre-back. Kilcullen's full-forward line thrived on increased supply.

Paul Bell kicked a fine point, Davis thumped over a superb long range free, and by the time Jones cut the gap to three, it was very obviously game on.

We entered the last ten minutes and Kilcullen only got better. They were soon level, Shane Lambe feeding a fine pass to Colin Fox, who thumped home a goal that had been coming.

Eoin O'Donoghue put Johnstownbridge in front again with a free, before the game's only flashpoint. Davis took exception to a sliding tackle by Mullen, and threw him to the ground. A wrestling match between several men ensued before both Mullen and Davis saw red.

It did not affect Kilcullen's ascendancy. The veteran Lambe added a score of his own; Colin Fox put over a free. The Bridge lacked leaders. The Rags found them everywhere and calmly withstood a late rally. By the time Colin Fox chipped over the insurance point, Johnstownbridge, even if they will be a different side with a full hand, had much to ponder.

Kilcullen had reinforced the belief established last year that they can win almost any game at this grade. Best for them were Barker, O'Brien, Fergus Aspell, Davis before his red card, and the entire full-forward line. Up until they stopped playing, Johnstownbridge had impressive contributors in Damien Murray, Paul Mooney and Barry, Seamus and Cathal McNally.

Kilcullen:
Paddy Maher; Ciaran McMahon, Ronan Aspell, Mark Dooley; Brian Fox, Kevin O'Brien, Fergus Aspell; Thomas Davis (0-1f), Darren Barker; Paul Bell (0-1), John Whyte, Warren Kinsella; Colin Fox (1-2, 0-1f), Shane Lambe (0-2), Paul Jones (1-2, 0-1f). Subs: Kevin Fox for R Aspell (38 min); John Browne for C Fox.

Johnstownbridge:
David Maguire; James O'Connor, Noel Cawley, Damien Murray; Aonghus Gannon, Des Holton, Paul Mooney; Barry McNally, Will Holton (0-1); Ian Farrell (0-1), JP Mullen (0-1), Seamus McNally; Eoin O'Donoghue (0-1f), Shane Flanagan, Cathal McNally (1-4, 0-1f). Subs: Jason O'Keeffe for Flanagan (ht); Jimmy Farrell for Farrell (43 min); Mickey Donnelly for Gannon (44).

Referee:
Alan Lagrue (Naas).

2010 League Fixtures Announced:
The league fixtures for the upcoming year have been released. Raheens started the game firing on all cylinders, and with the wind at their backs, they took a 1-6 to 0-3 half-time lead. In fact, they should have been more in front only for some wayward shooting. However, the Rags started to gradually claw themselves back into the game with some good scores including a fine Shane Lambe goal, and a wonderful point from Darren Barker. But with time running out, the Rags were still 4 points behind, until Shane lambe buried his second goal of the day, and Fergus Aspell got an injury time equalizing point. This left the scores at Raheens 1-11, Kilcullen 2-8. Extra-time was again dictated by the wind, with the home side taking a 3 point lead, but Kilcullen then dominated the second period. An excellently taken goal by Collie Fox and some well taken points ensured the Rags victory. Best on the day for Kilcullen were Thomas Davis who dominated midfield, Darren Barker, Fergus Aspell and Collie Fox.

Kilcullen Line-Up: P.Maher; M.Dooley(0-1), R.Aspell, C.McMahon; B.Fox(0-1), K.O'Brien(capt), D.Barker(0-1); T.Davis, W.Kinsella(0-1); J.Whyte, F.Aspell(0-3), J.Lambe(0-2); C.Fox(1-3,2f), S.Lambe(2-1), P.Jones.
Sub Used: P.Bell(0-1).

Keogh Cup Semi-Final:
Kilcullen face Raheens tomorrow (St.Patrick's Day) in the Keogh Cup, in a repeat of last year's Intermediate semi-final. In an even first half, Kilcullen's ability to find the net proved crucial, as they took a 2-3 to 0-5 lead into the break. However, the Rags then dominated the second period and saw the game out impressively. Man of the match was Paul Jones, who always looked dangerous and finished up with 1-3 to his name. Brian Fox, Darren Barker and John Whyte all shone too in a solid team performance.

Kilcullen Line-Up: D.McMahon; C.McMahon, R.Aspell, M.Dooley; B.Fox(0-1), K.O'Brien(capt), D.Barker; T.Davis, W.Kinsella(0-1); J.Whyte(1-0), F.Aspell, J.Lambe(0-1); P.Jones(1-3,1f), S.Lambe(0-1), C.Aspell(0-2f).
Subs Used: P.Maher, K.Fox, A.Clarke, K.Kelly.

Keogh Cup:
Kilcullen face Ballykelly tomorrow night in their final Keogh Cup group game.
