Girls U 15 Division 1 Semi Final
Saturday October 14th, 12.30
Kilcullen 2-12 vs Maynooth 2-10
Referee: Liam Herbert
On a bright autumn day ideal for football these two teams met in the latest chapter of many close encounters and this would prove to be no different. Maynooth started the match strongly and were clearly determined to avenge the loss from earlier in the competition and were soon winning most of the battles across the pitch. The Kilcullen girls fought bravely but were finding it difficult to get to grips with a very focused Maynooth side, eventually Maynooth’s dominance began to tell on the scoreboard and they went in at half time fully deserving their 2-07 to 1-02 lead.
Kilcullen emerged for the second half more energised with the large deficit on the scoreboard obviously focusing the minds. The teams traded scores in the opening minutes but Kilcullen gradually began to lay siege to the Maynooth end of the pitch and chip away at the Maynooth lead. The Kilcullen defence had to remain vigilant as Maynooth remained dangerous on the counter attack but crucially for Kilcullen they were now winning many of the battles they had been losing in the first half. Kilcullen finally got their noses in front a few minutes before the final whistle and managed to hold on for win on a score line of 2-12 to 2-10 to crown a remarkable come back that seemed very unlikely at half time.
There were no stand out performers for Kilcullen but was truly an excellent panel performance to pull together from such a dire half time position to produce an exceptional second half performance and seal a place in the final. Credit must also go to Maynooth for their part in an excellent football match which must have been a fantastic spectacle for any neutral present.
